Can the pro96 decode(Not sure if this is the proper term) 700Mhz Control Channels??? I put a 700mhz site in my setup and the scanner wont scan past that bank. It gets stuck in that bank.

Thank you

My understanding is that though you can open up a portion of the 700 MHz band using the extended frequencies option in Win96, the unit will not trunktrack in that range. Based on what I've heard and your experience, I would judge that to be true. The only scanner I know of that actually has trunking capabilities in the 700 MHz range is the 396T.

So does this mean bad news for pro96 owners if 700mhz sites keep popping up?

Any hope for 2096?

Just checked on my pro-2096, and it appears to have the correct step of 6.25khz.
Any hope for it trunk trackingon 700mhz?

The PRO-2096 Trunk scans using the same method as the PRO-96, so I don't think it will work on 700MHz control channels as originally thought.

It has the correct step size and with "extended" frequencies, it can tune the proper frequencies, but it will not trunk track. The Pro-96/2096 uses a frequency verification test. In other words it takes the channel instruction from the control channel, calculates what the frequency should be based on either pre-loaded channel data or the base/offset/step entries you have put in; then it sees if the derived frequency is valid. There are no "valid" frequencies in the 700 MHz range.

don't worry be happy!

700 mhz trunking, encryption, LTR, pro voice, passport, decryption, and anything else is possible with the right computer programmer for the pro 96!!!! usb ssb cw wfm nfm .1khz to 4500 mhz! any questions!

Frequency valid test

If it's a simple software test, does that mean a GRE mod will/could make this work?

Third party?

Man, you ARE a dreamer, aren't you? You forgot Cellular.

All you need to do is come up with a version of firmware for the PRO-96 that works, program a replacement CPU, and exchange that for the one in the radio. Simple, huh?

Duct tape a toaster on the back and it will make toast, too!

I can't wait to see how you add modes and frequencies that the hardware does not support (such as WFM, and SSB) by manupulating the software! Win96 has expanded the frequency range to the greatest extent possible, but those ranges do not come close to the specs of the OEM bands. HF? >1GHz? Forget it.

Joe, don't shoot him down yet. He might know something we don't.

Well, if he can substantiate any of his claims, I'll retract the appropriate portion of what I said.

So, please post the details of how this would be done, GDIGITAL.

I have a question. Can you provide any proof of your great allegations? Like the little ol lady said, "Where's the beef".

I'll be happy to shoot it down.

None of the GRE scanners have a DSP. Without digital signal processing circuitry in place of the AM detector and FM discriminator circuits, it is absolutely impossible by reprogramming the firmware to decode additional types of modulation. These scanners also have absolutely no circuitry to receive anything below approximately 15 MHz, nor above 1.3 GHz.

But, it sure sounds cool! Now, for the next project... Reprogram the ECM in your Pontiac with the firmware from a Boeing 777, and you can *fly* to work instead of driving!

While we are shooting down stuff... ;)

If the PRO-96/2096 has no DSP, what is it we are upgrading with the user-upgradable DSP firmware? Why did my '96 not work on CQPSK before the upgrade, but did after it?

We shouldn't shoot that guy down totally, because I have seen a PRO-96 decode ProVoice.

As far as all that other stuff like going to as high as 4000 MHZ, or TDMA, or CDMA , or GSM, or IDEN, or encription--forget it. The PRO-96 has a DSP of course--or it wouldn't work like it does.
If any of that such as 700 trunking or ProVoice comes about I wouln't be surprised.

Radio Shack/ GRE won't do it though, but don't be suprised if some kid does it.

Radio shack could secretly be happy because it will increase the life cycle of the PRO-96/2096!

Good point about QPSK and CQPSK. Still, the firmware can only do as much as the IF circuitry allows, and the front end has frequency coverage limitations that can't be overcome by firmware. It could be reprogrammed to handle new digital modes at or below 9600bps though.

When did you see it decode ProVoice?

See if you can find the posts that I and others did previously in the MA/Com-ProVoice thread from months ago. It goes thru the whole scenario.
Don't get too excited--Its' not as good as you must be thinking.

If that thread is gone, repost and we can regurgitate it again.
