Hi all!

I am using Pro96Com version 1.4.0 program, but it causes my computer to reboot after 40 min. If I keep using it, it works like a virus the computer will reboot then in a few min. it will reboot again and again and so on (even when the program is shut down). I got my copy from Yahoo PRO96 site.

Anyone else having this problem. Anyone have a fix?
I want to use the program. I like the data it is of value.
I have no clue why it does this. It only does it with Pro96Com, no other program or software.

Computer is HP Media Center PC m7170n
USB to Com. Port Adaptor by Iogear
Radio Shack Programing Cable
only Zone Alarm running in the backround
I checked for virus, bugs and cookies and the system is clean

Totaly at a loss. Help.

Does anyone know of "Free" software that does the same thing that works on the BCD396T?

Thanks
Alex

As for the Pro96com software delete it and download a copy of Don Starr's Pro96 software, it isn't free but it is free of malware. There is Uniden software free of charge from Uniden for the 396t.

PRO96COM is totally different from WIN96. WIN96 is programming software for the PRO-96/PRO-2096. PRO96COM extracts data streams from the PRO-96/PRO-2096 and creates lists showing tower sites, affiliations, TG's, radio I.D.'s, and more. There is nothing wrong with the software, and it is definitely not malware.

Hi Alex:

A couple things to check...make sure all the fans in your computer are working. Also blow out any dust that may have accumulated in the fans, and heat sinks, and memory modules on your computer.

How much RAM (memory) does your system have? Do you have adequate free space on your hard drive, and have you defragmented it lately? Do you now how large your Page File is? Have you checked to see if any other "services" are running in the background? HP Media Center PC's are notorious for running all kinds of unnecessary junk in the background. You can check this by going into Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services. Services are different that applications.

PRO96COM is excellent software, and runs stable when everything else is right. I'm not aware of any similar software for the Unidens, because Uniden scanner do not output the same type of data stream, unless they're keeping it a secret for some reason.

Discriminator tap software? I haven't tried any of that yet. Malware could be in it. Try downloading another copy from another location.

It sounds like a computer hardware issue to me. There is nothing in the code that I'm aware of that would cause a reboot of the machine. (I should know, I wrote it). And I resent the implication that "it works like a virus".

As I said above, it's more likely a computer hardware issue. I've run the program for hours here with no issues. I know other people that run the program 24/7 with no issues (other than the occasional USB adapter glitch).

Look for Unitrunker by rfmobile. You'd have to tap the discriminator output of a radio to use it, but it should work for you once you do...

Obviously you have malware issues... Pro96Com is NOT malware and never will be.

It works with the Pro-96/2096 only and will decode the data stream from 9600bps control channels that is provided on the PC/IF port similar to trunker. It doesn't use the discriminator port (since that is beyond my programming abilities at this point).

Pro90Com Problem

Well It is not a hardware problem. The computer is working fine, it only reboots when I run Pro96Com software. I could run the computer all day without a problem. Start up Pro96Com and "wham" reboot.

I even looked for new drivers for the USB to Serial port. No help, still does it.

It may have a problem with Zone alarm ( I know that other programs do). Is anyone using Pro96Com and Zone?

It is strange that it runs for 40, 50 min. then it reboots.

This Sucks!!!

Very unhappy

I don't have any malware, at least that is what my antispyware programs and antivirus programs tell me. I have never tried the software but since it only decodes a 9600 baud CC I can't use it. I thought that somebody "may" have modified it. Since it doesn't need a discriminator tap I would try it but the only P25 system I monitor is 3600 baud.

I understand the frustration. I have machines at work the exhibit the same thing, but those are heat related hardware issues (and Pro96Com doesn't run on them at all).

I have had no other reports of the program causing reboots on machines. I get occasional reports of blue screens, and communication issues, but not reboots.

In the about box on the program, what exact version of the software is it showing?

Just because your "spyware/anti-virus" software says you have none, doesn't make a difference. Garbage gets loaded on a Windows PC faster then the security software can keep itself updated!

Okay, first I have moved this topic from the Radio Shack forum to the proper forum that it should have been posted in to begin with.

Next, for those of you who don't know what Pro96Com software is, please stop trying to "help."

User mikey60 is the author of the software and has worked very hard to make sure that it works well (even for PIA's like me) when only incomplete testing was available. I would recommend that you join the PRO96COM yahoo group and obtain a fresh copy of the software from there.

At first blush, it sounds like an overheating problem to me also, especially since it takes 40 minutes or so to do it at first and then will continue to do it. Perhaps the CPU usage on PRO96COM is high (I don't remember) but if so that will drive the heat up in the case.

The program does have rather high CPU usage - it will not run on my P266 laptop since the CPU usage pegs at 100%. At least a Pentium 3 should be used with PRO96com. If CPU cooling is at all compromised, there could be problems with the PC shutting down.

You can try to increase the latency on the config screens. That should reduce the strain on the CPU if you're seeing 100% utilization.
