To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Problem programming TK-7102H

I recently purchased at auction several Kenwood VHF radios. Half of them are TK-7102H. I'm using version 3.11 of the KPG-70D programming software and a USB to microphone Jack cable. I know the cable is functioning because I have used it on other Kenwood radios such as the TK-762HG, TK-7160H, & TK-7302HV and it has worked perfect with the appropriate software for those radios. When I try to read from the radio I get a "check connection" error message on each of the radios. When I try to pull radio information, I get the same error message. I tried to read the radio with CHIRP and I get "Radio Refuse Program Mode"

Is there something I'm missing or is there some kind of lock installed to prevent me from doing anything with the programming and if so how do I reset it? Thanks in advance for any help.

NMO's installed, while-u-wait.
KPG-70D is the correct software for that radio, and as far as I can find, 3.11 is the latest/last version.
If your cable checks out and works on the TK-7160, then it should be good.

If it's not programming, then there's something wrong with the radio. Are these K model (North American market) radios?

I am assuming they are North American market, they were owned by a school district and used in their school buses.
The factory sticker says

TK-7102H
-1

I thought it was possible that something was wrong with the radio, but I have 8 of them and they all do the same thing.

The Kenwood KPG-46 is the correct cable for that radio. Sometimes the aftermarket ones are flakey, but if it's working with the TK-7160, then it should work with this radio.

Make sure you have the right comm port selected. Check your device manager to make sure it's correct. Sometimes they'll bounce around on the list of comm ports.

Sorry if this was mentioned already. Some software needs you to set the model information correctly before connecting to a radio. In Model → Model Information, do you have it set to "TK-7102(VHF)" and "146 - 174MHz(K)"?

Yes, That software is for the 7102/8102 and 7108/8108 model radios.

Some repeater owners mod radios so that they cannot be read or changed. Look at circuit for opens.
