Problem with ARC300 won't read scanner

I have RS Pro 164 scanner, I have purchased the license for ARC300 and RadioReference. I can send data to the scanner and it accepts it and the light on the data cable comes on when data is being sent to the scanner. However, when I tell the software to read the data from the scanner, the light on the data cable does not come on and nothing happens in the progress bar in the software. I have checked the COM port as suggested in the documentation, and it is the same COM port that is used to write to the scanner. Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I can correct it? Which PC cable are you using?
Some older RS cables are 'one way' only.

Problem resolved. The data cable was new and it wasn't making good contact in the jack on the scanner. Thanks for your help.
