I'm having a problem getting Discovery to work on my HP-1. I've been doing this for years so I know the procedure. I go through all the steps but when I hit the start button nothing happens. It looks greyed out?? The only unusual thing I did was change the batteries a couple of days ago. Any thoughts?

You might pull batteries, memory card, and start from square one. Leave them out for 10-15 mins...Not sure is a reset on that unit.

You indicate that the 'start button' looks greyed out. Have you run a Discovery session on this same unit in the past? (From your comments, I presume that the answer is "yes"?)

Pulling the batteries, card, etc, from the scanner as KB8RQH suggested would in effect "reset" the scanner, which might be a good place to start. If no luck, I'd also sugest formatting the card, resetting it with the "clear user data" option in Sentinel, then reloading your Favorites list onto the card which would give the scanner a fresh start. If you read through multiple threads & posts here in the forums, it becomes obvious that so many of the issues with the various database scanners, whether Uniden or GRE/Whistler, are 'cured' by replacing, or formatting/reloading the memory cards. That includes operational failures that, in theory, should not be traceable to the card, yet dealing with the card exorcises the gremlins.

Have you tried pulling the power cable and let it run on the batteries to check that those actually work? If it sense a battery problem it will not write to the SD card, that it needs to do to save the findings during discovery.

Thanks for the suggestions which I tried including pressing the reset button. I'm now noticing that in the Advanced Option menu that the Register Advanced option is greyed out. I still have my Key but not sure how to register. Is it possible that by doing the reset that it erased my key?

In theory, that should not have happened.

If Register Advanced is greyed out, then the scanner is indicating that the Upgrade key has been applied.

Is "Discovery Mode" the normal light white color?

If so, press that

Does "Create New Settings appear normal?

If so, can you use the on-screen keypad to select a new system?

Once you select a new system & site, via the keypad, does the Start selection work?

Are you trying to run a "saved" discovery session, like a system that you've run before? If that system has been re-named, deleted, or is not in a Favorites list that you have set to be scanned, it won't let you run the session. I was reminded of that when I tried (without paying attention) to run a previously saved session on a system that was not part of the list that I had set to scan.

Thankyou again for your response. Let me run down my steps to see if there is anything I'm missing. I've deleted the 2 systems I run Discovery on so I can start from scratch.
All; services are on and my range is set at 10 miles. I have Full Data Base checked as well as all my favorites.
Hit Menu then Advanced Menu then Advanced Option.
Hit Discovery Mode Hit Trunking Discovery Mode.
Hit Create New Settings then Select System.
I chose the GCRCN (Greater Cleveland Radio Communications Network) in Full Data Base.
I choose the Cleveland Simulation Site which is what I have done for years.
I name it Cleveland System then hit Accept
All the options are in white and able to be changed except the Start button.

Thanks Again for your help and have a nice weekend!!

Hmm

In theory, set up like that, it should work. But try this & see if it helps:

In Sentinel for the HP-1, access the Profile Editor.
Click on the Discovery tab.

There, you can create your Discovery session, giving it a name, and setting your basic options (logging new or all, compare, duration, etc)

Set up the basics & download to your HP-1. To actually run that session, you'll need to make your system selection on the scanner. Once you've done that, see if Start will work. No idea if that will work for you, but at least it won't "cost" anything other than a few minutes of your time.

Good luck!
