I know this is somewhat off topic, however this thread is as close to what i need. I live in Visalia and i'm trying to monitor Fresno fire with some but not the best luck. Dispatch will come in almost clear at night but during the day i'm lucky to hear anything. Do you guys know of anything else i can try to improve the signal? it'd be great to have Fresno fire to monitor

Fresno City Fire radio has three transmit sites two are in the City of Fresno and one is on Owens Mountain just east of the City of Clovis. The one is in the of Fresno and the other is in the city of Kerman, the repeaters are at 60 & 80 meters respectively and the mountain transmitter has a total elevation of 485 meters or about 1,591 feet. If you have a decent tower and could point a four element yagi in the direction of Owens Mountain you should be able to hear them a little better. Fresno City radios per FCC license can only operate in a 65.0 Km. radius around fixed transmitter site location #1 located at 15850 W. Kerney Blvd. in Kerman. This puts you about 10 miles outside of their radio communications limit.

This is my setup at this point, I just the yagi pointed towards Fresno. I estimate the height of the yagi to be 45'. I'm not familiar with Owens Mtn. how can i point it towards that mtn. more accurately?

Here is a link to a website that maps the repeater sites... site 6 is owens mountain. you can use your location and the mountain location GPS coordinates to aim your antenna.

This might help. Fresno changed out all their transmitters and receivers for all departments with Fresno City over the last year. Without mentioning the manufacturer of the new equipment, there are unresolved issues that would probably affect your listening abilities from your distance. And don't expect any resolution to those issues anytime soon...

Why would Fire 1 and 2 come in loud and clear but Metro is scratchy?

Strange - just set up the radios here and I get Fresno City (Metro/Rural/UHF Station Alerts = jury's still out on the other 5 channels) as well as Visalia over here, in western Merced Co. That's on an omni. Then I have always gotten Tulare & Visalia in many locations when mobile.
