Good afternoon.

I can't get my iPhone 14 to pair with my Icom RS-30I application.

I've carefully followed the RS-30I instructions in my iPhone on how to scan for Bluetooth devices, and the message in the phone's display as the scan takes place says "ICOM BRT-003 Not paired." It would therefore seem that the iPhone has found something from either the R-30 radio or the RS-30I app, but can't finish connecting/pairing the devices. I was able to pair my iPhone 14's Sirius/XM satellite radio app to my Ford Escape's Bluetooth system, but I've run out of ideas and/or luck with this latest challenge.

I found a previous thread on Radio Reference about others who've had difficulties like this and followed the suggestions mentioned there, but none of those have worked so far.

My R-30 is running with CPU version 1.10, DSP version 1.03 and Bluetooth version 1.12.

Any additional ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Do you already have one of the Icom apps installed and set up for another of their Bluetooth linked devices? I found I could not have the ID52 app and the R30 app installed together and got exactly the behaviour you report.

Hello, G7RUX.

No, I don't have any other Icom apps installed.

I'm going to try restarting my iPhone and the R-30 to see if that will help. I also reloaded the RS-R301 app, and that didn't help either.

Thanks!

One thing to try is - take your phone and the R30 receiver OUT somewhere there is no other device that has Bluetooth enabled or turned on. I have seen cases where things won't pair because they are "seeing" some other smart phone or some other device such as televisions and Blu-ray players within the 30 foot radius of the R30. Do you have someone else in your house with a smartphone? They can temporarily turn off Bluetooth. Do you have an Apple Watch? Turn it off. Turn off any earbuds or headphones.

I do seem to remember that it was rather tricky initially but, it once done successfully, has been very stable.

I also seem to remember that you need to not pair the Bluetooth on the phone first, use the function in the app itself.

Thanks for the tip, DudleyG.

I tried that procedure late last night by taking the radio and my iPhone as far away as I could from any potential sources of electronic interference in the house, and I'm sorry to say that didn't work either.

I'll keep trying.

Well, how about that?!

That may have done the trick, G7RUX. The R30 and my iPhone 14 are paired now!

Thanks!

Me again . . .

Now that I have my R30 paired with my iPhone, I'm wondering what the benefits of doing so might be.

It would make a world of difference if I could receive audio from the R30 through my iPhone or through my automobile's Bluetooth system, but that's not possible. I therefore have to keep the R30 nearby if I want to hear anything.

I understand that Icom sells a headset that will accept audio from the R30, and I may look into that at some point.

In the meantime, can anyone out there tell me what I might be able to accomplish with the app that I couldn't do before I installed it?

Thanks!

The remote control is very useful, especially as the receiver will provide audio to all sorts of Bluetooth headsets. I use mine with the radio in my bag so it is completely hidden.

I do the same as above, plus at home I can have the R30 connected to an outdoor antenna while listening via a bluetooth speaker as I move about.

Okay . . . that makes sense if you're wearing a headset. It's looking more and more like I may need to invest in a wireless headset.

Thanks, G7RUX!

Other than the Icom headset, which I'll bet is very expensive, what brand of headset would you recommend?

Ooops . . . I asked the you the wrong question about headsets.

I see you're using a Bluetooth speaker, so just out of curiosity, what brand of Bluetooth speaker are you using?

I paired an Anker Soundcore Ace A1 speaker with the R30 and previously used an Amazon Fire tablet that I rooted to control it (See photo). I think the speaker was $20 from a few years ago. I have also paired the R30 with some particular Taotronics BT earbuds, which I do not believe are available anymore. I am unsure if I paired it with any other headsets or speakers. I definitely do not remember it failing to pair with other BT speakers I have.

This setup is nice as the R30 is a fine handheld receiver. I connect it to a diplexer that splits to an outdoor HF antenna and a discone for the VHF and up stuff. ( Some filters inline help keep things happy )

Thanks, vagrant!

I just checked on the internet, and Icom's VS-3 headset is selling for as much as $160+, so it's good to know there are less expensive options.
