Like many others I am having big trouble trying to set all of this up. I have read over and over all guides I could find. Found that some of them especially the Unitrunker part. The screen shots look nothing like what I have when I have unitrunker open and I have the latest version.

this should not be that difficult to set up. Maybe Im confused on which parts do what because what I'm reading doesn't match the software. Any help would be appreciated.

i use a couple RTL2832U dongles and this guide helped me:
Unitrunker | Realtek

how it made it sense to me was:
a) identify the trunked system type
b) find the control freq
c) setup signal VCO with the above info
d) aim for 100% signal health (play with gain & antenna placement)

once that happened i had the Site window popup with a populating call history.
then i setup a voice VCO with a virtual line & DSD+

it would help if you mention:
1) your receiver hardware
2) your trunked system specs: freqs, type (motorola, apco p25, edacs, etc), etc
3) what you've achieved so far
4) specific issues you're facing

i have

2 RTL2832U dongles

EDACS Provoice

3) Downloaded all software programs, plugged in the dongles and found what i think is the main control channel. I've got the signal and voice set up in unitrunker or at least I think I do I hear static and what seems to be voice or data being transmitted and then back to static.

4) Not sure if I have it right. I don't get the window pop up and is supposed to download the system Like ive seen in the guides. I have strong signal I can tune in FM radio stations and the NOAA weather channel with no problem. Would like to be able to just put all this together and listen - so far it's been a hair pulling experience.

i'm not familiar with EDACS. i assume once you've tuned into the control channel that the Site window will pop up and call history will start showing calls.

the reason you hear voice/data and back to static may be that you've parked your voice VCO on one of the channel freq, instead of 0 (zero).

i suggest first getting your signal VCO setup properly before worrying about hearing voice calls.

here are my suggestions:
  • plugin one RTL unit
  • select your signal receiver
  • under [Info] tab, verify the following is set properly:
    • RTL Device
    • Correction (ppm) value
    • Gain (divide by 10 for dB value) (try 288)
    • Drift Correction, Auto Gain & Baseband AGC unchecked for the time being
    • Sample Rate = lowest value (.96 mbps)
    • VCOs = 1
  • Under VCO:
    • VCO > Role = Signal
    • Voice > Mute = checked
    • Voice > Audio output = unspecified
    • Voice > Digital output = unspecified
    • Voice > Parked = {the control channel freq}
    • Signal > Discover = checked
    • Signal > protocol (motorola, apco p25, edacs96, edacs48, mpt1327) = all checked
then click the Play button. if the status changes to Running, after a while unitrunker should determine the signal protocol and show it under VCO > Protocol. it should be EDACSxx as you said. VCO > Health should be close to 100.

once you've verified the protocol, you can only select that protocol, uncheck Signal > Discover, and all the remaining protocols.

if that works and my assumption about EDACS is correct, the Site window should pop up with activity under [Call History] tab.

when you get there, we can move on with voice decoding.
