RTL_FM is one option. If running on a pi or Linux/Ubuntu platform.

Run the external speaker connection to you PC. Download Audacity, a sound recording free program, Set it for mono to double you recording time. Set it VOX to further increase recording time. Anything coming out of your PC speakers will be recorded. I offend set my base radio(HAM) to one of our repeaters to check traffic over nite. Works great, Easy to cut out dead air if you decide against VOX(where you may lose the first second or two of audio. Has a visual sound wave, you can even read Morse code just by looking at the wave form.

What is your audio source? If you are on Windows and using an SDR dongle, then FMP24 from the DSDPlus package works great. Doesn't record, but you could use ScanRec or similar for that.

I gave it a try today and it didn't work. No squelch action. Then I read the docs...

FMP.txt:

FMP's scanner mode is designed to be used with DSD+. FMP and DSD+
should be running in the same folder. While DSD+ is decoding
digital voice, FMP will auto-hold on the current RF channel.
If DSD+ is not decoding digital voice, FMP will auto-scan to the
next channel in the scanlist. This behaviour will let you monitor
multiple digital channels
, including control or rest channels.
FMP will not get hung up on constant carriers that are not broadcasting
digital voice calls.

So no analog scanning with FMP.

I have updated a few SDR# plug-ins that may do what you ask.
  • FreqMan - Alternate frequency manager for SDR# that has a basic scanner feature.
  • Frequency Scanner - A much improved frequency scanner for scanning ranges of frequencies at fast speeds. (also works with freq managers)
  • Audio Recorder - Records what activity SDR# is seeing (uses mute/squelch)
All these updated plug-ins come with documentation to assist with installation and their usage.

Download - see the related folders.
NOTE: Use 7zip or WinRAR to extract files from the .7z file and read the .PDF file for installation and usage of files with SDR#.
NOTE: Don't select the Download as ZIP option in MEGA, just select standard download.

If using Linux, RTLSDR-Airband might meet your needs. You can use it in multichannel mode (constantly monitor multiple frequencies within the sdr's bandwidth) or scan mode (scan between frequencies, even if it requires retuning the device). It can output to any combination of soundcard/UDP stream/mp3 file/icecast server.

I'm using it for the narrowband analog FM frequencies on my Broadcastify feed and have been happy with it. But note that you need to specifically compile it with NFM support (instructions are on its github wiki page). GitHub - szpajder/RTLSDR-Airband: Multichannel AM/NFM demodulator

I must be using an old version of FMP24 with my setup, I'll have to check later. But it works great for scanning a couple of analog channels when configured with the fmp24.scanlist file.
