Programing a pro 164

I am trying to program a pro 164 for a guy, I have a pro 97 for which I use win97 to program with the computer cable. I can upload and download my info from the pro 97 and try to upload it to the 164 but it never enters cloan mode, in fact nothing happens and I even tried to download the 164 info to win 97 and it just wont enter cloan made at all. I did also initalize it incast it was locked up so now it just says all channels locked out.
Is the cable the same from the pro 97 to the 164?
Any suggestions?

Programming a Pro-164

Did you download the latest version of Win97? Don added the Pro-164 to the program so if you have an older version it won't work.

yup downloaded the brand new one, and even tried another one, I am not home but I think it is called psr 300 or something but it would not connect to pro 167 either.

oh I dont think it would matter but it says on the screen on startup it was programed by scancat although when I initilized it that was wiped out.

and the cable I have from my pro97 is not a usb, it is a serial connection, but dont think that would matter either.

No, you need the RS USB cable #20-047. The Pro-164 won't work with the old serial cable.

darn, dont have radio shack in canada anymore, anyone know where I can get it here?

I checked radio shacks web site and the cable just looks like a usb-stereo jack cable would one for any other model work that I can get here?
and hey what if I used a usb to serial adapter on my old cable???

No, that would not work. The connector on the scanner end has to be a stereo connector and support full duplex operation. The old cable has a mono connector on the end and is half duplex (so even adding a mono to stereo adapter won't work).

oh well not much I can do then he will just have to suck it up and buy a cable, thanks for the help.

If you have a 1/8 inch mono to stereo adapter, that will do the trick. I did that when I upgraded to the 164 from the 97. It will recognize it right away.

For the Pro164 you have to use the RS part #20-047 cable. Use it without the 3" extension. Walla!!
