Getting a Pro-106 where???

OK......hate to give you the bad news but I am not sure there is a Pro-106 anywhere right now. I would love to get one as well, but none available anywhere I have found. They are about as rare as a George Bush supporter or offer of employment letter right now.

Yeah, it may be tough to find one - if you go into a store, be sure to have them check other stores if they don't have one, that's how I got mine. Took a drive across town, but hey...

As to the programming:

- You do not need to enter all the ID tags, you can also enter a "wildcard" entry that will work for any transmission that takes place on a given trunking system. Of course, you won't know who it is unless you've memorized the TGID numbers. An alternative (what I have to do on my older scanners without enough room) is to enter the more commonly-used TGIDs, then use "wildcard" mode and you'll at least have alpha-tags for the ones you care about most.

- The PRO-106/GRE-500 and PRO-197/GRE-600 do away with the banks/channels programming arrangement. (Thankfully!) It's a bit different, but once you get the hang of it I think you'll like it a LOT better! I sure do anyway...

You will make a "TSYS" object for each trunking system, all it contains is the frequencies for the site of interest. (Or all sites, if you want a multi-site system to roam as you drive around.) Then you will create talkgroup objects for each TG you want to enter, referencing it to the appropriate TSYS object. You then create scanlists (what could loosely be referred to as the old "banks") of various talkgroup objects. A given object can be in any particular scanlist, or in several, all, or none! A given scanlist can contain any variety of objects (trunked or conventional) it doesn't care.

There are no 'banks' to speak of in the 106. There are just over 1800 scannable objects to put conventional frequencies, trunking frequencies, and TGID's into. Each object has its own number. Since you have a 96, you can download Win500 and import frequencies from the it to the program. It took a while for this 'older' scannerhead to understand what was what. The 106 gives you 20 scanlists to program a lot of monitoring fun. I am slowly learning my new radio (have had it since the beginning of Nov.). It is one outstanding radio to scan with. I truly believe the next level is SDR (software defined radio). For now, this is the closest to that approach.
