4"]B]I have a TK3173 that I bought used but every time i read the radio it request a password in order to view the radio info, is there a way to go about bypassing the password??

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.
The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Read radio, go to OPTIONAL FEATURES. Find DATA PASSWORD and delete it, then write radio.
That should take care of it....

If you don't have the password you can't read it. You can create a new data file and see if you can write to it, but the 3173 also has a write protect password. If that is enabled and you don't have it then the radio would need to go to the factory to have the passwords reset. A lot of shops are enabling both read, and write protect passwords now.
There are a few other ways around it, but they are not easy.

I have a 7160 with the same problem.
Do you have a password? Have you tried creating a file from scratch and writing to the radio?

I've not tried from scratch. But I don't have a password for sure...I'll try from scratch....But I think it has a write password also.

Sorry, but it looks like you're kinda boned. Only the Kenwood magic wand can blank the radio and give you access to it. Better prepare to "send it in".

Yea I Have, I've already contacted them about it, 75.00 an hour but I have no choice.
