I'm suppose to be getting my Home Patrol 1 tomorrow and have a question. From what I understand HP will find services up to 30 miles away. I want to monitor Des Moines which is 38 miles away. Should I set it for the zip code of a town between here and there that's within 30 miles?

Once you have owned it for a while you will determine what you want to listen to. You will be able to pick specific systems Des Moines, or anywhere else within range and create favorites lists. Then you will be monitoring what you want to listen to and not all the extraneous stuff that you get with a zip code setup.

Definitely set your range to the max (30 miles). Keep in mind that the 30 mile max is an approximation. Your experience may vary. In my experience, I live in San Diego, but back in the day before Riverside county went encrypted, I was able to listen to Temecula (58 miles away) with my Home Patrol-1 fairly consistently with a good antenna. Again, your experience may vary, but I would think 38 miles is conceivable as long as you don't have any large mountains/hills/rough terrain in your way.
