To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a few XTS1500s that I want to change some options in, and maybe add a few conventional channels. I have the software, and know how to program them. Now here is my problem. These radios were programmed onto a smartnet trunking system. I do not have the system key. Am I able to change what I want in the radio (on the conventional side) without 'losing' the system key? In other words, am I going to screw up the trunking if I program the radio without having the system key loaded on my computer?

I hope this makes sense

Thanks!

I do not want to give you misinformation, so I will just tell you what happened to me. About four years ago, before we were given permission and the key to reprogram radios on a local trunking system, I was able to successfully change around several conventional channels without doing any harm to the trunking. This was with older version software so this could have changed, I do not know. Good Luck.

Thanks for your reply. I do have the latest version of the CPS (although I haven't had time to install it yet). I highly doubt that I would be able to get the system key. The county dept that programmed them would probably want us to send them the radios for changes. I should mention that the radios are owned by us, not the county. I may just try programming one of the radios and see what happens. They are hardly ever used (actually, I dont know if they have ever been used), so if it messes it up I'll send it in to be reprogrammed. Maybe I could get them to program a few other talkgroups in as receive only while they have it.

you can change anything you want with teh conventional. you can change the channel order of the trunk personalities in the zone/channel list, even remove some of them. you cannot ADD talkgroups, change TGID/UID, or anything under the Trunking system/personality trees.

i highly recommend you first read and archive each radio. i usually save them as serial#original.cps, then any changes i make i save as serial#rev1.cps/rev2.cps/etc. this way you can back up a step or 2 if you screw up! keep the various archives for a time, but never delete the original just some of the middle step revisions.

also you will not be able to clone between these radios, but you can drag and drop the conventional personalites and seperate zones. just open the CPS 2x, one with the template of the way you want them and the other with the radio to be programmed. drag from the template, delete any unnecessary/duplicated chans/zones, and write to the radio. i also usually just create a new zone if making a lot of channel changes, it is just easier during drop/drag sometimes!
