A family member jsut gave me an older Ericcson MGM450 mobile. i am about to take my license test and need help figuring out what frequencies the radio works on and how its programmed. I live in roanoke and could use some help as im really new to amatuer radio. thanks

The only thing I can find on it is 450-470 MHz and 16ch 40w scan. A place in Winnipeg has them refurbished at $229.00. http://www.prairiemobile.com/used_radios.html

It is possible that the local radio shop in Roanoke can help with re-programming, assuming the radio works. For what they would likely charge, you would be well on the way, dollar-wise, to buying a good ham rig that would serve you much better. Since someone gave it to you, you would not be out anything.
As for local monitoring, I'm not sure how much good it will be since most of the public safety in the area is on 800.
