Hope everyone is doing well. since the covid, I have been trying to get a repeater I have to program. I have been thru a long list of things, I have a Motorola P1821AX. I have a older dell which I have already installed FREEDOS on it, and when I try to read the radio RSS Version R06.00.05 03-JUN-93 . since this is a different type of radio I was told to use the connector thru the programming port on the front. I had purchased the cable on ebay :Motorola Spectra / Astro Spectra Digital Mobile Radio 15-pin Programming Cable | eBay . after getting everything up and ready when I try to program the radio, I see the display change to program but then I get an error. Serial Bus Failure, Bus timeout error. I have tried different settings on the loading of dos, but it doesn't seem to change anything. I have spent about 2 months searching for answers on what could be wrong. but I'm stuck, so I'm reaching out to everyone and thus hope that someone could tell me what they think is wrong. I have used this computer to program my vehicle Spectra and did not have any issues with the computer itself. however, this is the first time I'm using the builtin RIB cable. I have followed everything they say about the cable and I'm lost...., anyone, have any experience of programming this particular repeater??

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Spectra analogs are finicky about CPU speed, UART type, and aftermarket programming cables. If you can get your hands on a genuine Motorola RLN4008 and cable, you'll have much better chance of success. Disable CPU cache in the BIOS of the laptop, and any device drivers such as mouse drivers, which may be interfering with the Spectra RSS from communicating with your radio.
I use an old 486 SX-25 with an RLN4008E (revision E) and OEM Spectra cable, MS-DOS 6.22 and can read and write these legacy radios without fail.

I have an update for this. I had received a number of questions of people who also bought this repeater. In order to program this repeater you will need the following RSS YVN4051 Portable Repeater v1.02.00 I had reached out to a number of people and finally got an answer that is correct. I have yet to find the software but I now I have isolated the exact one needed. Number of people who said you can use a spectra rss is incorrect, for this model you MUST only use the YVN4051 1.02.00 rss. I have asked Motorola, and they don't have it anymore. So this might become a boat anchor. If anyone can shed light about this, I would be grateful.
I would like to see if anyone knows how to reach out to bluedevil. I cannot see a way to PM him, I wanted to see how and if he was able to get his P1820ax repeater working

After a long 6 year search I did finally get my hands on the required software. spent today programming works like new. I can see this radio is not a popular subject, but goes to show, never give up.... just when you think there is no light at the end of the tunnel someone turns on a switch.
