I will be updating to one of the P25 type 2 radios soon - I am curious about programming.

I have experience programming EDACS trunking into my RS scanne (frequencies and talk groups/labels, etc.)

How much different is it to to P25 T2? IS it work paying the vendor to program the nearby counties, or is it generally easy enough to load myself. (I don't necessarily need to be up-and-running out of the box).

Lets assume for the moment that i will NOT have the GPS function at the outset.

Thanks!

There is a learning curve to programming trunking into scanners. Having experience with EDACS will help some. As for having someone to program for you maybe once but you will need to learn to do yourself at some point, Things change. With a software package it makes programming easier. With help from RR users and the forums you will figure it out and get what you are trying to listen to up and working.

Also make sure the radio you buy will be compatible with the systems you want to listen to, (simulcast or not).

Based on this article: Volusia County's Public Safety Radio System To Get $24.6 Million Upgra I would suspect it to be a simulcast system. Someone in the Florida forum might have more information. The concern is encryption, and if that's the case save your money. If you have other P25 simulcast departments around you that you'd like to listen to, or plan on traveling to, the SDS100 or SDS200 would be the best option.
