To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am having trouble programming repeaters into my UV-5RA. I put the radio in frequency mode, and program the frequency (146.910) with an offset of 00.600 and - shift direcion and then save it to a memory channel. When I put it in channel mode, there is no "-" so I push the *scan button and it shows the same frequency (146.910) so it is effectively in simplex mode. I went into the menu and it showed the shift direction as "-" but the offset as "00.000". I put it back in frequncy mode, the frequency 146.910 is displayed with a "-" above it. I push the *scan key and it shows 146.310. Does anyone know how to get it to do that in channel mode? Can I program repeaters into memory channels in this radio with just the radio, since I don't have any software or programming cables.

Programming Baofeng for repeators.

I had to do some research on how to program repeaters it's not hard once you get the hang of it.. but what they don't tell you is the channel has to be blank If you have another frequency in the channell it will not work, It will not override the excisting frequency.

Glad you figured it out. But seriously though, $15 for a programming cable will save you SO much head ache (once you get the drivers installed and in order. That actually might give you another head ache, but it's worth it!).

One of the things about amateur radio is the feature of being able to program the transceiver in the field. I would imagine that is why most if not all ham transceivers are programmable without a computer or cable. It really is an plus to know how to manually program your transceiver. With these CCT - Cheap Chinese Transceivers- the key to programming them is when to punch the FUNC or MENU key after programming in the offset and the offset change. Hitting exit I believe cancels most of what one enters. Sometimes it is trial and error until one discovers the magic buttons to hit and when. Although the manuals are not the greatest, it does help to RTFM. But once you master this, one should be able to program in a frequency on the go without having to haul along a computer just to add/change one frequency.

You can get it for $8 (or less) on Amazon

The biggest issue most people run into is not running the proper drivers when using a generic programming cable.
If you are running Vista, Win7 or Win8, your driver cannot be newer than Prolific 3.2.0.0
This driver is found in the DRIVERS and USB Cables section.

If the wrong driver is installed, it will not work.

There are 2 software programs available, the factory software and CHIRP.
These can be found in the SOFTWARE sections found in the Home Page

Enjoy your new toy.
