Hello everyone, I am new to this whole scanning hobby. I know somewhat on how to program the scanner manually but there are a few things that I don't understand. For instance, I would like to program all the public safety agencies in my area {York, SC} and when I pull up the frequencies in my area, I believe there are 8, I see some in black and some in red. When I scroll down and see the different agencies such as Sheriffs, Paramedics etc, I see blue numbers for DEC etc. Do I just program the 8 frequencies and I will get all the public safety agencies? Thanks in advance everyone.

Welcome to the Radio Reference forums! Are you in York City? York County is using a P25 trunked system. The system type needs to be P25 Auto. There are a total of 16 frequencies in the site. You only need to enter the 4 red control channel capable frequencies into the frequency list. All of the frequency info is carried on the control channel. Enter the frequencies without the lower case "c". If you have a Wildcard in the talkgroups, you will receive every talkgroup on the system. It is better to program what you want in separate scan lists so you will be able to easily select exactly what you want to monitor. It is far faster and easier to use programming software. Do you have a programming cable? If so, which one? You can use either ARC500 or PSREdit500 programming software. Both have a free trial period to decide which one you like better. I use Butel ARC500 Basic for my Radio Shack PRO-106, the older brother of your Whistler WS1040. Both use the same software.

You may encounter a phenomenon known as simulcast distortion (often manifests itself with full or fluttering bars of signal with skipping or missed transmissions) with your WS1040 if you're within range of two or more towers on the York Co. Simulcast (see site map below). Isolating the signal to just a single tower can at times be a daunting task but feel free to follow the multipath mitigation methods outlined here:

I assume this would be considered a multi site correct?
