I'm planning on permanently mounting a Slim-Jim copper antenna on a mast to the side of an un-used chimney on my house, the height of the mast and material of the mast is yet to be decided. This will be for a local railroad feed. I want to do this right the first time, I've read a lot on here and I'm somewhat confused on how best to do this for this particular setup.

On my ATCS server setup at another location which consists of a KP-20 antenna at the peak of a metal shop I used a Polyphaser in line with the coax which connects to an 8 gauge copper wire and that connects to an 8ft ground rod.

This is the Polyphaser surge protector that I used.

Will this setup work also for this antenna and setup?

Do I also need to attach the ground to the antenna itself? I've read that can help with static buildup.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, that PolyPhaser will work.
However, make sure it comes with the mounting flange. The ad was unclear. You want that bracket to mount the module and connect the ground wire.

I believe the "Slim-Jim" antennas are J-poles, and they are DC grounded, so yes, you should be able to ground at the base where it attaches to the mast. Run that ground down, pick up the PolyPhaser, and continue down to at least one 8 foot ground rod. National Electric Code also says you need to bond that antenna ground rod to the home ground rod to keep everything at the same potential.
