Can anyone tell me if Provoice suffers from simulcast distortion just like P25 systems? If so will the SDS100 perform better than the BCD436HP on Provoice Simulcast systems?

ProVoice is just a digital FM audio mode.

if your system is a EDACS Trunked system, then each site TX will be varied by a few millsec... so you might hear a slight echo in the audio.

EDACS does not use NFM mode, it is FM or DFM (ProVoice). However here, it only compressed the audio when I tried the NFM mode. Much clearer and normal in normal FM mode on Both 436 and the sds100....

YMMV...

i tried both, when in normal FM there were a ton of errors in the decode for some reason, i am aware it is FM, but it decoded to near 100% on NFM

similar issues in Springfield, OH but didnt do the NFM comparison, 2 FW back it wasnt as bad

Here in Oklahoma City, Which uses a mixture of Provoice (police and fire) and analog (everything else), I have not heard any distortion on any scanner of mine with Provoice (536,436,SDS100,996P2). There are wide variations in volume, however, depending on who is talking. OKC has an inner simulcast ring and an outer simulcast ring, both with many transmitting towers.

Not true if your mobile! Certain areas are bad with distortion. On the question of variations in volume, I’ve noticed the same. I wonder why the AGC, if turned in, doesn’t fix that.

Btw, I have a 436 and a 536.

I wonder if the SDS100 would perform better when mobile? Also, I have noticed the age problem on both the the 396XT, and the 436. It doesn’t appear to do anything.

Well, the SDS100 does not have any AGC settings at all. The volume variations are just as bad on it as the 436/536 with the AGC on (I can't see that it does anything either). I don't know about all the locations in OKC, but the reception on Provoice in my car seems fine (I don't do much mobile). Even with setting channel volume offsets, volume variations are crazy.

My 536 do have analog AGC but it is only noticable when I connect a signal generator and increase the modulation level of a test tone with a weak RF signal. The noise dissapears totally with full modulation, while a scanner without AGC like the UBC780 instead increase the noise when the modulation increase, like any radio receivers raw audio.

It should be the same AGC function in digital mode but I have no digital test equipment at hand.
Uniden uses AGC with a moderate influence to the audio to not get any annoying pumping effects, like you can hear on a Whistler scanner. I prefere Unidens AGC audio.
