FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: April 10, 2010 Time: 3:30 pm

On April 10, 2010 at 12:18 am, state troopers were dispatched to a crash on U.S. Highway 287 approximately 18 miles south of Lamar, Colorado. The crash involving a Freightliner tractor-trailer and two other cars killed one person and injured several others.

Troopers have been able to determine that the Freightliner was traveling southbound on U.S. 287 when it attempted to pass a Toyota Camry, also traveling southbound. The semi attempted to make the pass in a designated “no passing” zone.

The Freightliner struck a Chrysler New Yorker head on that was traveling northbound. As a result of the impact with the semi, the Chrysler then struck the Camry.

A passenger in the Chrysler was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver was taken to Prowers Medical Center with serious injuries. A third passenger was taken to Denver Health Medical Center, also with serious injuries.

The driver of the Camry and his two passengers were taken to Prowers Medical Center. The driver sustained moderate injuries while the passengers were transported for precautionary reasons.

The driver of the Freightliner, 25-year-old Cesar Carbajal of Irving, TX was not injured. Carbajal was arrested and taken to the Prowers County jail on the following charges: one count of careless driving causing death; three counts of careless driving causing injury; careless driving; passing on left where prohibited.

The passenger in the Freightliner was not injured.

Names are being withheld pending identification of victims and notification of next of kin.
