PSE&G - are they still on a trunked system?

Hi all,

About 8:15 last night we lost power in West Caldwell (west end of Essex Co.). Try as I might, I was unable to pick up anything on the PSE&G trunking system on my BC-785 (mounted in my vehicle, using 3 different antennas - including one intended for 800 MHz). I have all channels entered in the radio, but I couldn't even hear a control channel. The outage lasted about 90 minutes and no amount of searching turned up a signal for them anywhere.

I'm wondering if the system shown on this site is old obsolete information, have they gone to iDEN/Nextel or something else? Is anybody in this part of the state able to receive PSE&G's crews?

Hrmpf. I guess I must be in a dead spot here. Is that the system one would be able to monitor the progress of a power outage repair on, or at least the dispatching of crews?

Also, what settings should I have on my 785 in order to receive the system properly? I'm thinking perhaps I had something mis-set somewhere along the way. Frankly, as I said, I can't even copy the control channel in "conventional" mode, let alone the trunked talkgroups, so I'd figured they did like ConEd and went iDEN or something.

OK, I'll try driving around a little and see what I can hear.

Yeah they have talkgroups for storms that are setup. Check the database here on RR most of the stuff I have programmed came from that, I have found some talkgroups using the search feature while monitoring. I have not been able to confirm what they are used for though.

Hello Everyone..

PSEG still operates on there 900 mhz trunked sytsem but talking to there lineman and techs
they also use MDT's and Nextels. PSEG also has an emergency EOC operations room
located at 80 Park Plaza on Lower Level two.

Hope this helps.

We also had an outage at about 10:00 P.M. last night. Flipped on PSE&G and couldn't hear anything. Just flipped it on now. Control channel 939.000 is active.

Located in Camden County.

To go a little further, while the CC was coming in strong, there was no traffic. Holding on the CC, I could see TGs flashing on and off. Checked the modulation; was set to auto (396). Tried NFM and FM with no joy.

I have received this system before. What (?) has changed?

Last night I was able to lock into the control channel and received a few talkgroups (nothing local). Signal strength wasn't great, but copyable about Q3. Today I heard what almost sounded like a slightly different data type, and the 785D couldn't lock into it as a viable control channel. It just stopped on it as if it was noise on a conventional frequency. I'm near Bloomfield and Pasaic Aves. in West Caldwell, mobile, and using a dedicated 800 MHz antenna on a brand-new mount/coax, so I'm going to rule out my installation as the issue.
