Howdy from the =Flyin' S's Ranch, near beautiful downtown Lake View Village in Bayou Country, Louisiana. No, I'm not in the Swamp and I don't hunt aligators, but they're mighty good eatin', LOL!

I hope this is the right forum to ask a digital question about Amateur Radio PSK - Phase-shift Keying with single sideband. I've got an all-band, all-mode Icom 706 Mark 2-G rig, a Dell 2400 computer that has Debian 6 (Squeeze) on it. I have a soundcard, but I don't remember which brand, but it works great. :D

My question is "What else do I need to send and recieve PSK?"

I await your learned answer.

GOD BLESS,

Hi Gene <waving muh arm>

Hi Gene!

Nice to make your aquaintence. Thanks for the web site. I'll check it out. No, I never thought it was your e-bay page. I learned a long time ago NOT to ***/U/ME anything, you know the phrase, LOL! I've found most folks are very helpful here on RR. Yeah, there are a few 'JERKS', but I just "Iggy" (Ignore) them. Saves on taking blood pressure pills. The interface looks like a reasonable buy. I'll have to get one. :D

I'm interested in running PSK-64, BPSK, or J-65, which ever is better, on HF. I'm working on a 'Part 90 - Public Safety' Group that can be brought up in a moments notice. It's for those who do SkyWarn, and to pass storm data they get from their local Fire & Police departments around in the path the storm is taking. The radius being 300 miles from Shreveport, in Northwest Louiaiana. It also would pertain to natural disasters and hurricane's.

I beleive this would be most reliable, but not as reliable as cw, I'll be using Debian 6 (aka. 'Squeeze') to carry this out, as I've heard how "Ham Radio Deluxe" has problems in certain areas. Debian 6 is "FREE" as opposed to HRD's asking price of $65.00.

Thanks again for the website and I look forward to having a QSO with you on 'digital'.

GOD BLESS,

Very basically, you would need a radio, a computer, some kind of interfacing to connect the two, and a program for whatever mode you decide to use. Of the three things that interface can be the 'biggy', sort of. It's a thingy that allows a signal to/from that radio and the computer without a lot of 'artifact'/RF interfering with things, distorting that signal. Most computers and radios don't like each other, so filtering out the 'junk' between the two can get sort of 'hairy'. It can be as simple as just a couple of jumpers, or as complicated/sophisticated as you wanna make it. If it works, it works. If it don't, then fix it...

Debian 6 is an Operating system, HRD is a software suite.. I'm confused as to how one would replace the other...

You're Right

Howdy ALL ;)

Yes, Gene, You're correct. While Debian 6 is an O/S and HRD is a program, if I wanted to use Morse Code I could 'apt-get' a program called "Digi-pan" from one of the depositorys in Debian 6, it would install it and I could use CW. Debian does not have all the features of HRS, but it doesn't have the "problems" that HRD has as well. We have some hams that are Linux programmers and are coding programs that will give all the features of HRD.

My favorite bands are 10 & 6 with AM on 10 and FM on 6meters. We don't have any near-by 6 meter FM repeaters, but we do have some locals on 6 ssb and FM simplex here.:D There was some talk about a 6 meter FM repeater going up in Monroe, LA. (about 100 miles away), but I've nothing more on the subject.

Respectfully submitted,

YOU need a computer, program<free>, simple free one is fldigi, and an interface, I use a signal link, wrkd the first time and it is inexpensive. jt-65 is a free program also on the internet a separate program, for all the modes you can use MULTIPSK also free....
They all use your soundcard programs described.

PSK - J-65 Free?

Good Saturday Moning <Tippin' muh cowboy hat>
Doctor, Thanks for your advice.

Gene, N9MXQ, earlier gave me a website I can get an interface for
about $43. If your's is a "soundcard, I already have a decent sound
card in another broken down computer, it might work as well.

I knew that DigiPan was free but I didn't know J-65 was and the other
must be BPSK, right? I'm looking for a digital mode that has very few
hiccups, if you understand, it must be as rock solid in sending and the
receiving of msgs as can be. I mainly will work 30 meters and above to
stay away from the troublemakers we unfortunately have below 30
meters. I mainly will use it for a scientific base for wx conditons in the
area I'm talking to, like outside temperature, humidity, conditions (rain,
sun, or snow) and barometric pressure that could have an effect on the
frequency, path, and strength of a signal. I also want to have a Disaster
Prep Group within the USA. It's a group of folks preparing to live under
a disaster and the supplies that would be needed in their location. Every
part of the country is different, Some have forest, some desert, these
factors would play a large part of their readyness to survive a disaster,
no matter what. Another thing that could be used for a severe storm
warning system that would also prepare folks 300 miles away and give
them 'time' to prepare their property and themselves for whatever may
be coming (Hurricane or Tornado).

I have an old Heathkit 2036 (10w FM) transceiver that I want to convert
to accepet a plug that would allow me to do 2 meter PSK. If that would
not work I do have my Icom 706 MarkII-G 2m ssb rig that would work. I'm
terribly new to the PSK business so I don't know how it all works yet, but
I'm willing to learn at nearly 66 years old.

Well, I've rattled on enough, it's almost my diabetic lunch time and time
for a peanut butter and grape jam sandwich, with maybe some celery sticks.

Go me reviving an old thread.

Fldigi supports nearly every digital mode you could want. It's free and runs on Linux just fine.

I use the SignaLink from Tigertronics the base unit runs about $85 and you can get a cable for your Icom radio for $15 and the jumper "chip" for around $8. I plugged my SignaLink in and it worked right out of the box.

Fldigi doesn't support j65 but I'm sure you can find something.

i been working digital modes for over 20 years now the most simplest interface i have found so far for my ic-7000 (icom) is this adapter made by w2ihy about 30 bucks on e bay. it has input and output plus ptt.
it connects to the acc jack on the back of the rig very simple and efficient. i use mix w, and chroma pix for sstv. but mix w software has all modes. you should be able to hook all up in less than 30 minutes and get on the air. my choice of audio cards is the midiman audiophile 2496. but i think just about any decent audio card should work with mix w, there is a ton of stuff in the net about digital interfacing. good luck.

I started out with a Donner Digital Interface for my Icom 746pro. For the most part, it was very easy to set up and I was playing with PSK31 in a matter of minutes. But for some reason, I just could not get JT65 configured. I upgraded from the Donner to a Signalink USB and had JT65 up and running in less than 5 mins. This has become my preffered mode.
