Not throwing stones, but correct me if I'm wrong. It seems that GRE is no longer supporting the PSR 500 or 600 with software updates. They seem to concentrating their efforts on the PSR 800. I know it's may choice, but I refuse to purchase the 800 as I still like to program my radios the 'old fashioned' way so that they're set up the way I want. That being said, I'm still a big GRE fan.

Your not wrong but......Keep in mind that the 500/600 has been out for over 5 years and is a mature scanner. I still use the 500 for the reasons you state but I live in an area that is moving to P-25 systems and may be shut out of listening to some transmissions because the 500 will have hardware deficiencies that the 800 does not have on some Phase II broadcasts. GRE would have to do a hardware update on the 500/600, which is unlikely, to make it compatible with the 800. So the answer to your question is be well aware of what the technology is of the systems you want to monitor. If they are state of the art or soon to be you could be disappointed with a 500/600.

These scanners have not been out for even close to 5 years.. 3, MAYBE 4, but not 5.. And the most recent update came out less then a year ago.. Maybe there's nothing left for them to improve on...

The PSR-300/400/500/600 were all introduced in 2007...that's 5 years. The FCC type acceptance for them was granted on 11/29/2007, which means they were in development for months prior to that. Take a look at any of the owner's manuals and you'll see the copyright year is 2007.

weird, i had no idea it was november yet....? now that you mention that, i do remember buying 1 with tax money RIGHT after they were released to the general public, in the beginning of 2008. So with it being august and all, its been less then 5 years, not more then 5 years, like what was stated above. so my guess of 4, was indeed correct..

and the thought of someone reviewing one in august of 2005, is laughable. August of 2007, yeah, a beta tester may have reviewed it, but as stated above, they didnt make it to the general public until at least after 11/29/2007.

Your wrong and admit it. Mine was purchased in September 2007 from the Ham Station and is not the first serial number. The scanner is more than 5 years old with updates since it was issued. Geeesh the lengths some people go to so that they cannot admit they are wrong. End of debate as to age as far as I am concerned.

Here are the exact dates of the FCC type acceptance for all the models in chronological order:

PSR-300 - 06/22/2007
PSR-500 - 08/08/2007
PSR-400 - 08/30/2007
PSR-600 - 11/29/2007

Last I checked, today is August 28th 2012, which is over 5 years from August 8th 2007, the day the PSR-500 was type accepted. As I stated, that means they were already being developed and produced for months beforehand, so technically speaking the design is probably more like 5 1/2 to 6 years old by now.

You were wrong, sorry. :)

I'm not sure much can be improved upon with the 500/600 series as they've had several nice firmware improvements in the few years I've had mine.
As far as concentrating their efforts on the 800? Thats debatable. The few (one?) updates that have come out have addressed not even a fraction of the many suggestions people have come up with in the several threads out on this goofy scanner and its quirky software and operating system.

It's cool, brother. :)

Back to the main point of the topic, as much as I love Uniden products, the fact remains that GRE pushes quite a few more updates than Uniden does. Uniden went years without releasing any firmware for the 396/996XT series, finally releasing something to address some of the P25 issues. GRE has released quite a few firmware/DSP updates for the 500/600 in that same time frame, the latest one being earlier this year.

Like Squier said, what more is there really to tweak if all the bugs have been fixed? Updates just for the sake of having something "new" to give the illusion of support? No thanks, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! ;)
