Hi all, my name i John and I am new to posting on this forum. I have been scanning for about 10 years but only have enough knowledge to get my scanners to produce nice results. You all are so knowledgeable about the nuances of each feature, their impacts and technical meanings. I understand the definitions of all the features, but cannot make the connection as to what they will actually do if changed or switched "on".

As I stated, I don't know what all those features, settings and parameters will actually mean. I want to hear as much as I can in my area. Is there an "idiots guide to what all those parameters really do"? I have used many Uniden scanners (inc. digital) in the past but the GRE seems so much more customizable. I am really excited about what this scanner can do (I think :) )

I am located near Glastonbury, CT and want to optimize my scanner to perform its best. As a side note, I will be getting a PSR-500 this week. I want to scan the CSP, other trunked and digital systems and regular local systems as well.

I realize that this may be old hat for y'all, but I would appreciate your feedback.

Well, besides what's on the manual for each of the regular Global settings which are explained in pages 99 to 113. And for the "Expert" Global settings, someone from this forum have put a lot of effort in gathering those in here:

Maybe after becoming more familiar with those, you can ask more specific questions and further clarification. Because otherwise there's far too many of them and we'll just end up "recapping" everything....

I think you will be happy with the psr500. Many of the custom features really make scanning more enjoyable and you will love its ability to custom ANY design you want. On the flipside, be aware as I wasnt that the learning curve is quite longer since we mostly dealt with bank/channel arrangements and most recently, dynamic memory allocation. For some reason, I am having alot of trouble with several applications. I am seeing extra sensitivity on low band, making for frustrating monitoring. I also find the virtual folders quite different from the pro-96. Many say its exactly the same BUT for me its not. The audio quality on both anaog and digital is SUPERB!! Good luck with your unit!!!!!
