The 500 is on the way too me.As a rookie how long should it take time wise to have the 500 up and running.

I pre-configured WIn500 with all of my facorite frequencies, and imported the local trunked system from this website. Once my 600 arrived, I installed the USB driver, uploaded and was up and running in about 3 minutes.

I downloaded the manual ahead of time from the Grecom website. Spent some time reading it over.

I then downloaded the free trial version of Butel's ARC500 programming software. Spent some time playing with it.

Paid a few bucks for a premium subscription to Radio Reference. Then I downloaded my local digital trunked system frequencies into the ARC500 program. It was surprisingly easy.

SO, when my PSR500 arrived at my door, I was ready to program it.

I probably spent more time figuring out which USB port I was using for the programming cable.

All in all, I would guess that within an hour or so, I had the thing running fairly well.

Don't rush, have the manual printed out or handy on your computer.

Programming software and a subscription to RR are not musts, but boy will they save you LOTS of time and frustration.

You can do it. Don't be intimidated by those here who act like this is rocket science.

Ok that info is encouraging and brings me to another issue.I am being told by locals that not to even mess with a RR subscription and stick with either Win500 or ARC500 only.I understand about the free 30 day trial but at some point you will have to buy it.But also if you want to get the local digital trunked system freqencies i have to subscribe to RR right?SO in the end i will spend 70.00 to get what i need right? It is not about the money but it is all about getting it to my satisfaction. What good is it to download the local dts to free trial software that you will not keep.

The subscription isn't 100% needed, but without it you'll have to type the information into the scanner or the software yourself, or get a file from someone else to load into the radio... The Subscription can save you a lot of time getting started with one of the software packages, or if you travel a lot.

In addition to WIN500 and ARC500, PSREdit500 also supports programming these scanners, and the RR web service.

Yes I am a rookie. This is my first trunk capable radio. Last new scanner I bought was a Pro 2006.

I could have looked at the RR database, and manually entered the data into Win500, in fact it would have been less than $30.00 worth of my time.
However, I get a LOT out of RR, not just the ability to download freq data directly, so subscribing is my way doing my little bit to support this great site.

It can all be done manually if you want...

Access to the RR database is free using your browser. You can use that data to manually enter the information directly into the scanner via the keypad, or using any of the software titles that can program the radio. You don't need the subscription to RR to do that. What you cannot do without a subscription is use the RR web service to download those systems directly from the web service into one of those programs. Having the software and the subscription can save you a lot of time and typing.

You can also program everything you need directly into the radio without any software. It can be very time consuming to do it that way. It can also become somewhat frustrating if an error is made while entering the information, and you have to go back and make corrections.

The short answer is, no, the software and RR subscriptions are not absolutely needed to program the scanner, but the combination can save you a lot of time and effort setting up those systems.

Well so far so good i think. The transition from RR to ARC500 was a not bad at all,i think.Just waiting to get the scanner and download. Some of terms used are confusing but i have it set up to where more is better and believe that i can adjust.
