GRE radios work great for monitoring in Colorado. Just do your homework and research what your needs are so you can get the best radio that meets your needs.
Also, you might want to attend the Scanner meet in June. Members that use the GRE and Uniden radios will be there giving you a hands-on and in person Q&A.

Scanning since the 70's to today.
The quick compare from this old timer.
Uniden's require a key to upgrade firmware. GRE & Radshack do not.
Uniden 396 series are $500+. GRE 500 $399.99 (for now) at Ham Radio Outlet. PRO-106 $399.99 at RadShack.
Uniden 396 series do not track patching on P25 systems at this time. GRE 500 PRO-106 does with latest firmware update.
Uniden has the ability to link to GPS devices for mobile purposes.
FWIW Uniden is planning on releasing some newfangled(?) scanner tech later this year.

eh? There is a screen asking for a key but I have never needed to enter anything in it to upgrade the firmware.

I have the GRE 600 model which is a desktop scanner much like the 500 portable
and its awesome, great sound and picks up digital quite well. Also have the Bearcat 396xt
and it is a great portable scanner but its costly, the size is smaller than the GRE 500 which
makes it more portable and has more memory also. Hope to see you at the meet on June 6th!!!
