When setting up talkgroups, any time you add one to a trunking system, it's default talkgroup number is "Wildcard" and you can just leave it at that. From there, when a talkgroup on the system you are listening to pops up that you don't have programmed in, just push F3 and the PSR-500 will save it for you.

This is the PSR-500 equivalent of having an Open or Closed bank like on the Pro-96.

A Wildcard is a TG you have placed in a system to be scanned where the TGID is actually entered as "Wildcard." Since the scanner cannot associate or "look" for a specific TG that way, it will pick up any active TG during its scan. If you are manually locked on a Wildcard TG, the scanner scans the entire system over and over looking for active TGs. If you have a Wildcard as an object in the scan list, the scanner will scan for active TGs which you have specified and then hit the Wildcard and scan for any other active TGs.

When you use a Wildcard, you are operating in what is known as "Open Mode" because you have not restricted what the scanner can "listen" to. If you do not have a Wildcard or you have the Wildcard locked out, you are then scanning in "Closed Mode."

This is what it would look like if you were using WIN500 to program a Wildcard (notice that there is NOT a TGID, only the word "Wildcard."):
