I have a PSR 600 and thought I could buy a DC cigarette plug for it. Apparently no one sells them. Anyone find anything that works? I don't want to put in the batter cable that came with it because I use different vehicles. Any help please. Thanks.

Well I called GRE about that plug on their page and they say it is NOT for the 600 that it will not work. And RS has told me they don't know if what they have could power it effectively without blowing it???? Has anyone tried these two plugs to find out?

That is correct the 600 takes regular automotive power. The ones I listed will work for the 500.

You should have a power cord to wire into the car with your 600, I just checked my box and its in there. So all you would really have to have is a cigarette plug available at any auto parts store. You can also get ones that are fused in the plug, so you wouldnt have to have the fuse holder in the way. I musta had portables on the brain.

I thought that power cord was for a terminal hook up? Your saying it is for a cigarette plug?

It comes to use terminals at the fuse block or the battery, all you have to do is add the cigarette lighter plug. You should be able to buy an extra plug for the back of the scanner so you can have one in each vehicle if you want to go that route.

And that would provide enough power SAFELY without risk of blowing my scanner or having any other problems???

Yes it will as long as it is fused, either inline as it comes in the box which you would run to fuse block or battery or cigarette plug. Or you can get a fused cigarette plug and do away with the inline fuse that came with it. (As long as your car has a 12v system.) The alternator will push out more power, you can see this in cars that have a volt meter.

No problem, I had a bonehead minute thinking portable in the beginning. Glad we got it straightened out. The fused plugs are a little more expensive but Im not a fan of the old inline style fuses, it will make a cleaner install. Good Luck Sorry for the confusion....

Two cautions:
First, get the polarity right.
Second, if your car lighter socket is only hot when the key is set to aux or on, be careful if you have the scanner plugged in and operating off aux power and then turn on the engine. I had one scanner where that power surge was guaranteed to wipe out the memory of the scanner. I don't know what would happen to the 600 in that case, and I don't want to find out.

The 600 pulls only a tiny bit more current than the 500 does. There is NO WAY you are going to overload a cigarette lighter port with it! (I measured mine at something like 200mA *max*.) Now, you *may* get some annoying whine from the alternator - that's not uncommon when powering radios from lighter plugs. In that case, you may need a noise filter. (RS used to have them, I haven't looked in ages.)

And if you have the 600 on when starting a car, odds are it will simply switch off and show a "low battery voltage" message on the screen. That's what mine does when starting, and it's powered off the battery. The things just don't like the voltage dropping below about 10.5V. (My work truck's battery is a bit weak!) Just turn the scanner off then back on, and it's good.

If the lighter is switched, it may just switch off while you start then come back on when the key returns to the normal position and powers the port.

Ah so, mine does that too. I was worried I was pulling on the dc cord somewhere whenever I got in the car.

Radio shack sells cigareette or cigar plugs., or they used too. Check them out. they geenerally
come with wires attached. Also look for one you can salvage from wall warts, that is what
i do most of the time. Goood luck.

Radio Shack is now carrying the "T" adaptaplug again, which you can mate with their wallwarts, cigarette plug adapters or pigtail adapters.
