Was sitting at my desk last night listening to my 800, powering it through the USB cable. Probably sat there for a couple of hours and had no problems. Turned off the 800 and went to bed.

Got up this morning and noticed that the clock was not showing on the display. Tried turning it on, but it wouldn't power up. Unplugged the USB cable and tried turning it on, still wouldn't come on. Took the batteries out and put them back in and this time it came on.

Turned off the scanner and plugged the USB cable back into the 800. No clock in the display and would not power up. Decided to try a couple different cables. Same result. Tried this on my other two computers and the 800 would not display the clock or turn on no matter what computer I was trying.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, did you find a solution or will I need to send it in to GRE for repair?

Thanks in advance for any info provided.

Well if you have tried a couple of different cables then I am afaid your problem is internal. Contact GRE on their Website and tell them what happened. They will ask where and when you purchased your scanner and then provide instructions on how to ship your unit to GRE. If the scanner is still under warrently then they will fix it for free. If not, I do not think the repair is very expensive. Anyhow the same thing happened to me and the turn around time was around two weeks. Bummer that this has happened but GRE does provide excellent customer service and they will take care of you. BTW that is one aspect of the scanner that I am not found of, that is programing and power on the same port. Anyhow
Good luck.

Well, the darnedest thing happened this morning. Not sure how what I did "fixed" the problem, but for now, my 800 is working like it should.

Sat down at my computer this morning and pulled the SD card out so I could transfer some audio recordings first to the software and then to my computer. After doing what I needed to do, I put the SD card back in the scanner, and listened like I always do. I noticed that the batteries were getting low so, without thinking, I automatically reached for a USB cord and plugged the scanner into my computer. Much to my surprise, it worked. There was the clock, along with the little plug icon showing it's plugged in to an external power source. Pressed and held the power button and it fired up just like it's supposed to do. Just to make sure I wasn't dreaming, I unplugged and re-plugged it in a couple of times, powering it up each time and each time it worked flawlessly.

Not too sure why / how taking the SD card out and then putting it back in would fix the problem, but whatever the case, I'm happy to report that my 800 is back to working like it should with both battery power and external power.

Most likely removing the usb cable allowed a bit of grunge or dust to fall out of the lines that carry the voltage over the usb cable. Blowing on connections is one of the the things I learned to do first in the IT business when computers started malfunctioning. Back when we had a room filling library database control system to manage, washing machine size hard drives and all, the first thing our field engineer (who was from Argentina with an accent to match) always asked was, "did you jeegle de wires?".

Seemed like ghosts possessed mine as well today, stopped receiving anything, then a few things, then hooked it to the software and told me I was back to firmware 1.0 again. Didn't believe it this time. But uninstalled all the recent updates and went back to the previous ones. All is well again. Maybe its best I stay away from 'beta' updates.
