Has anyone tried replacing the USB port on a PSR-800?
My cable end fits, but there is a lot of wiggle to it and not enough to power the unit on.
I was wondering it replacing it in the radio is feasible with something more hardy.
I know it is also a data port, but that is secondary to me.

Try squeezing gently on the metal sides of the USB cable plug with some pliers so it is a little larger in size. Don't squeeze the plug so it is flatter but rather gently squeeze the sides of the metal USB plug so it is a little larger/fatter in size. It does not take much, just a touch will do. A spray of rubbing alcohol may help as well.

:( Is the radio's connector end moving inside when you 'wiggle' the plug? If so your female connector on the radio may be loose. This would almost always 'break' the fine points of solder where the connector attaches to the radio PCB. If so, your going to need fine solder skills OR send it off for repair. Good luck! :(

I've fixed a number of USB ports on Garmin GPS units and it's no easy task. It takes a sharp soldering tip and some very thin solder which can ball up on the iron and cause solder bridges between two of the pins. I typically heat the contact and then add a little solder to the trace on the board rather than to the iron in this type of work. Sometimes all that is required is to reheat the existing solder if a crack is noticeable in the solder joint.

I've had bad USB connections due to the USB cable alone. If a spray of rubbing alcohol helps then this is likely the issue. Then squeezing the plug end a little on the metal sides so the plug is just a little wider should help. Hopefully it is not the connector inside the scanner.

I just let G&G Communications repair mine. The 800 has a set of very fragile pins between the top and bottom of case which I bent by accident. Also the USB connector is soldered on the board and is not an easy repair.

:( "the USB connector is soldered on the board and is not an easy repair" Exactly. If that is the problem, you MUST make sure your above average micro PCB repair experienced. Which if the case is in the negative, best to send it in to either of the two professionals (G&G or Whistler). It doesn't matter if either company fix by PCB replacement, or 'repair', it is the end result that counts. I for one used to (long before my medical issue) be able to tackle these issues (sometimes successful), BUT that was then and this is now. Either way (or whatever your decision), Good luck! :)
