Has *anyone* figured out the `calibration?', or lack there of, of the so-called `S-Meter' in these 2 units? Is there any actual rhyme or reason to the way they come from the factory? From *my*, rather limited' experience it seems like the ones I am familiar with, 1 PSR-500 and 1 PSR-600, are rather optimistic in how they read. It doesn't seem to matter how far away a transmitter site is I pretty much always get all 5 bars with the factory settings. (As I sit here about the only time I see a drop to less than 4 bars is when my current scanlist runs through the few CONV frequencies, 3 FRS freqs that we use like an `intercom' between buildings, I have programed into it.)

Just an `Olde Fart's' 2¢ worth?

Try a 'search' in the Win500 forum, and I think someone came up with a better setting. I haven't gotten around to changing mine yet.

I use the following settings. They're not calibrated, but do give a more realistic indication.

1 bar = 510, default = 370
2 bars = 590, default = 450
3 bars = 660, default = 520
4 bars = 750, default = 610
5 bars = 820, default = 680

I had to change mine, I'd never changed them before.. I tried the wenk's setting first but when I got the the 5th one it kept telling me it was an incorrect formula so I put in the ones tobarger listed, What's it supposed to change? The signal strength meter sensitivity?

Note: I figured out it does.. Before I changed I was getting 5 bars on comms I could BARELY even HEAR...Now I'm getting merely one on those.. That's more like it! Thanks Guys!

Code:
PSR-500 S-meter
Settings: 470 540 610 680 750
The radio does not accept a setting above 750.
The table below lists the minimum signal in microvolts
needed to turn on a given S-meter bar.
Bars 46.08 155.475 159.435 452.600 460.700 853.4875
 1 0.3 0.5 0.5 0.8 0.9 0.4
 2 0.4 0.8 0.8 1.4 1.5 0.7
 3 0.7 1.3 1.4 2.3 2.5 1.1

Thanks! That *definitely* helps make some `sense' of the settings. *And* it also means that they are being *very* `optimistic' at the factory.

I `played' with the settings on my PSR-600 and came up with the following that seems to actually somewhat makes sense here at my `42' in `CODTRS land'.

Bar 1 = 370, Bar 2 = 450, Bar 3 = 540, Bar 4 = 640, and Bar 5 = 750

Now the only 2 sites on the DTRS that give me all 5 bars are the 2 that are basically pretty much `nextdoor' to me whilst the rest of the sites I've got programmed in show correspondingly lower bar counts the further out they are. Also, the assorted `CONV' signals I listen to/for actually show fairly reasonable bar counts and I have a bit of an idea of what type of noise levels are there at various times of the day. (Bars 1 & 2 could *possibly* actually be a tad bit higher though then I'd probably not have as good an idea of what level of noise I may have to deal with at times.)

Thanks again!
