A good external battery charger/conditioner may be the best method for recharging and extending battery life.
The actual voltage across the + and - terminals of fully charged set of NiMh batteries is likely about 5.2 to 5.25 volts as each are full at 1.3 v or so.
The wall wart will likely read about 16-18 volts without a load but when plugged into the turned on scanner will be about 8.5 to 9 volts. However, if no demand is placed on the charging circuit, the current demand from the wall wart will be lower. Of course, if the yellow holder is in scanner with batteries at reduced charge, this demand will increase and the wall wart output will be greater in current.
