Have you changed the battery level settings in the Advanced tab? The following works best for me.

14 Bars : 4.80v
12 Bars : 4.70v
10 Bars : 4.60v
8 Bars : 4.50v
6 Bars : 4.40v
4 Bars : 4.30v
2 Bars : 4.20v
0 Bars : 4.10v
Alert: 4.08v

For rechargable batteries, and with a good set you should get 8-10 hours. Changing the setting won't make your batteries last longer, but will give you a better gauge on how much you have used and how much is left.

Trust me... I was there... about done with the 800 after only a few days... but after getting "proper" settings in it, I'm getting at least 10 hrs of scan time using 2700mha batts.

I have a new Uniden BCD396XT, and while I know this is a different scanner, I had the same problems out of the box. I purchased 4 Sany Eneloops, and solved the problem, I can now get 8-10 hours per charge, not recording, light set to medium level. The batteries are below:

Amazon.com: Sanyo XX Battery Powered by eneloop, 2500mAh High Capacity, 4 Pack AA Ni-MH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries: Electronics

The Sanyo XX's are great batteries. Another good investment would be this charger:

Amazon.com: PowerEx MH-C9000 WizardOne Charger-Analyzer: Electronics
