Just tuned in the scanner before turning in for the night. Apparently a hit and run suspect trying to elude PD jumped into the Arkansas River by Mt Carmel Church and was caught in the river. They called out fire rescue, the guy is being sucked down river, right now by the Santa Fe St bridge. The river is pretty swollen from recent melting runoff from the mountains and is flowing swiftly. They are saying he most likely will be picked up down by Runyon Lake and is in danger of going over a spillway. So far is still a live rescue. Frequencies are 154.815. 158.790, 460.600. Suspect has apparently refused throw bags a couple of times. They are still trying to get him out of the river.

Apparently the suspect was out of the water briefly near the south end of town and is now BACK in the water, PD and fire are expecting him to be near the railroad bridge and are still trying to get the guy out of the river. Rescuers have a visual on him....Frequency 158.590, 158.790. Suspect just floated under the south railroad bridge on CO 227. They have a raft in the water chasing after the guy down the river. There is one cop transmitting that sounds like he's about to drop over, he's chasing on foot apparently...

Frequency 450.600, Firefighters went in the river after the guy, said he fought them and they had to let him go, sounds like they have every fire engine and cop in the city out there trying to get this guy out of the river. Fire is calling for more police at the south end of the rescue area. Apparently a lot of the cops are on foot.

At 9:32- Sounds like they got suspect out of the river and is in custody. Units are being called away for other emergencies........

Hit-and-run suspect hits river in escape try

By NICK BONHAM
THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
June 13, 2008 03:21 am
What started as an investigation of a hit-and-run auto accident turned into a river rescue Thursday as the suspect jumped into the Arkansas River in an attempt to elude police.

At press time, officers had not identified the bald Hispanic man who spent about 30 minutes in the river. The suspect floated about a mile downstream from below the kayak course west of Union Avenue to past the bridge on Colorado 227.

"That guy has to be a strong swimmer, considering how fast that water's moving," said Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Shelton.

The man refused numerous rescue attempts by firefighters who flung rescue ropes into the water. At one point near the Arkansas'
confluence with the Fountain Creek, the man managed to exit the water and climb up a bank, but he returned to the water when he saw rescue units and police officers waiting on shore.

Capt. Tom Rummel of the Pueblo Police Department said the man was taken to St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center for examination.

The ordeal started at 8:20 p.m. when the man, believed to be driving a blue Ford Explorer, hit another car at Northern and Beulah avenues and drove away, Rummel said.

"The guy ditched his vehicle in the Blocks neighborhood and a kid told one of our detectives that the guy ran down to the river trail,"
Rummel said.
