Often on the local Conrail freqs there is heard a brief transmission that ends with "...pull back protection disabled, out". It sounds recorded or computer generated. What is that all about?

It is a remote controlled switch engine. When switching, you pull a track back, and then sort cars. Pullback protection keeps the remote controlled engine from running out of the end of the yard. The engine senses that it is getting close and begins reducing speed. When it gets close to the end, it will stop.

If the operator needs to take the engine past the stop zone, they need to disable the PSP (Pullback Stop Protection).
