• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

And this is why I have NO problem with people using “non-conventional” methods...

Terrible business practice (for the consumer) It prevents honest people from being honest.

Check your APX's model number - it will either end in "AN" or "BN". the -AN models are starting to flood eBay because they are essentially EOL'd and companies are being encouraged to upgrade to -BN's. (e.g., the APX 6000 ENHANCED)
It’s essentially the same radio... so I don’t understand why a shop wouldn’t upgrade the flashcode??? That’s easy money for Motorola and the shop itself.

yes one would think so but I’m not sure. I think the hardware is different?

The 6000BN has a standard 1 watt speaker and Some other changes. I do remember the speaker being a big one.

The 6000BN is based off of the 8000. The underlying hardware on the VOCON and RF board is quite a bit different from the original AN version. In addition to the upgraded audio amp/speaker, the BN also has WiFi.

That explains the differences, with that in mind, I don't understand why a shop wouldn't sell flash upgrade features to a radio that can handle it.
That's easy money walking out the door.

Agreed, and such is why I’m going to get the flash upgrades I need, one way or another. No way in hell am I going to discard a four year old APX. Insanity.

And this way the 6000BN, & 8000 can be built on the same assembly line. Makes things easier for Moto.

That's a fair question. The shops almost certainly don't keep the upgrades "on the shelf", so they have to go to the Mother ship to order it. If the geniuses in Chicago (they're not in Schaumburg now...) say they won't sell the upgrade for an -AN, the shop can't do much about it.

Is there a reason they make the 6000 at all now? I don’t see the point
Well because they also make the 6000Li, a "Lite" version of the 6000 for departments that don't need so many features or specific features

I love my apx6000xe (AN model)
My agency (most p25 public safety Agencies)
Use 7/800. So I don’t have a need for additional bands, hence why I’m going with the cheaper option =)

Because it's quite a bit cheaper than an 8000, even if the 8000 is configured exactly the same as a 6000 might be (i.e. two of the bands deleted, making it a single-band radio). When you order an 8000, you are still paying for the RF hardware to support all bands, which is always there even if not enabled in the FLASH.

NYS contract pricing (base model, no features added)
APX 8000 All Band Model 3.5 Portable $4,719
APX 8000 Single Band Model 3.5 Portable $3,119
APX 6000 700/800 Model 3.5 Portable $2,591

That $528 difference between a single band 8000 and single band 6000 might not seem like much, but it's $52,000 for every 100 radios purchased, or half a million dollars for every 1,000 radios purchased. If your agency saves $52,000 by purchasing 100 of the 6000, that's 20 extra radios worth of savings over the 8000. It adds up quickly.

Do you have the cost of a 6kLi? I'm wondering what the price difference is between a 6k and 6kLi
