Can you buy the SDS-100 keys when you buy the scanner direct from Uniden or do you have to wait to purchase them after you get the scanner?

I do not believe Uniden offers keys for purchase at the time of the sale. At least I don't see a way on their site. You have to create a my uniden account, then register the scanner before you can purchase keys. I believe if you use someone like Bearcat warehouse or Scanner Master, they give you the option at the time of the sale but the keys are cheapest when bought thru your my uniden account.

Buy the scanner first and make sure it works properly BEFORE buying any keys. The keys are associated with that specific radio via electronic serial number and are NOT transferable to any other scanner, even of the same model.
Keys are available directly from Uniden at my.uniden.com. Login and register the scanner, then purchase. If scanner is already registered, click on All My Scanners under the "My Products" section and you'll see something similar to below with the links.

Everyone else already answered, but I wanted to add that activating the keys in the radio is very easy and straight forward.
The sane advice of purchasing the radio before the keys is the right way to go about this. It’s what I did when I got mine.
Enjoy your new radio and keys! Just make sure you don’t purchase anything that doesn’t make sense for your area and you’re good.
