Purpose of Spacer Channels?

I've noticed that some people use spacer channels. My question is, why?

I monitor the DFD, with all the towers in one bank, all consecutive and of course I'm getting choppy results.

This seems to be one of those 50 50 things. I've tried both ways and have not noticed any loss in tower coverage. The 96 comes with no spacer channels programed.
Not saying you are wrong just that I have not been able to verify that spacer channels are needed, at least in the 96. I could be wrong, I was once back in ought 2 or 3.

The Pro96 requires spacer channels to FORCE a check of all towers. If it loses signal on one, it will check the others regardless of a spacer. If you have the spacer, it will check every tower every time.

DFD is only on one tower 701, no other towers.
