• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Just got my UV973. All in all, a pretty neat radio.

YES, it does have crossband repeater capability! It will take the frequency
received in either the A or B display, and retransmit on the frequency
programmed in the opposite frequency.

YES, this radio has TRUE dual band capability! You can hear two conversations
simultaneously.

Insofar as being full duplex.. it is in VHF/UHF mode.. not VHF to VHF or UHF to
UHF. After all.. this radio does not have a duplexer.

YES, this radio CAN be locked to prevent users access to the VFO and the menus!

THe programming software allows only TWO frequency ranges.. the full VHF or UHF
coverage, and a weird partial coverage of the 2 meter and 70cm bands....
144-146 and 430-440 mhz... odd..

This radio has a MALE voice... no female :( It sounds like a computer generated
voice, similar to the NOAA weather radio.

Receive audio is nice and robust with that loud "clunk" when the receiver of a
repeater drops.

I do not know if the "muffled transmit audio issue" has been repaired.

I will do a more in depth review in a week or so, as I need time to put it thru
its paces and make time from my schedule...

It's not odd. That is the full extent of the 2m and 70cm amateur bands in most countries outside of North and South America and would not be considered partial coverage. Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu and Alinco nomally have two versions of all their VHF/UHF radios, an American version that covers 144-148/430-450 and a European/Asian version that covers 144-146/430-440.

I have several of the Chinese radios, 2 Baofeng's a Wouxun, and an FDC, they all do a good job, but Ive been looking at this Puxing because of its cross band ability. Right now I have a few local repeaters that I can hear just fine but can't quite get into them with the hand helds as well as I'd like so I use my Kenwood TM V71A and it does a great job but I think it would be great to use the Puxing if the TX audio was good, that way I can save wear and tear on my new Kenwood. Another nice feature is being able to hear both bands at the same time. None of the hand helds I have now do that, only my expensive Kenwood moblie does.

I'm wondering if Puxing has a battery eliminator that has the cigarette plug on it so you can run in the car off the lighter plug, I haven't seen that accessory for it , not unless the same one that works on other Puxing models would fit it ?

I've seen these Puxings on Ebay sold out of California at a decent price so no long wait from China to get one like I had to do with my Baofeng. Looking forward to your more detailed review on the transmit audio...

I have a Cushcraft 10 element dual band beam up at 35 feet, so cross banding with only one watt from in the house would get me into those repeaters real good.

The px-888K batteries and eliminators will work on the 973. From my tests, it seems the transmit audio problem has been fixed.
