• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

    If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I just bought a Motorola Quantar repeater to use for my Ham club repeater and I need to make some changes, but I need the RSS programming software. Can't seem to find it though a Google search.

Help!

I'll pay for it legelly, just don't know where to get it. It should still be available. It's not that old.

Thanks

I registered, but it says I will be contacted within two days by Motorola to finsh the registration. Guess I'll wait until the registration process is over before requesting the software, thanks

According to my MOL account, Quantar CPS (RSS no longer available) is RVN5002. Current version is RVN5002AZ (14.09.01), however RVN5002BA (14.10.01) is also shown on the site but "not yet available".

On a side note for any MOL/M company folks lurking here ... brilliant move restricting search terms to 4 characters or greater when people need to search for things like "RSS" or "CPS". Instead I had to search for all "Quantar" items and go through all the results by hand to find it.

The programming cable

I was looking on EBay to get a programming cable for my Quantar and I found one for $34.95, but I swear the picture looked like nothing more than a serial DB9 male to female.Am I right?

I got plenty of those cables lying around, thanks

A nine-pin male to nine-pin female EIA-232 null-modem cable (Motorola part number:
30-80369E31) is required to connect the computer to the device.

So instead of buying the specific Motorola cable and paying too much, won't this on EBay for $5 do the trick?

10ft DB9 Male to Female RS232 Serial Null Modem Cable

thanks

It's not free . . .

I completed my registration and a few days later got my welcoming email as my Motorola Online account had been activated.

I logged in called the 800 number and worked my way to a human. They told me to click on the software license electronic agreement document said it would be processed in a day or so, but aha the software is not free. $265 for download and a CD is mailed to me. ouch, oh well.

Time to save up my dollars . . .

M rarely ever has "free software", the good news is that when you do purchase it you can download it immediately, no need to wait for the CD.

Huh. Strange. I never bought it but I can download it. However, this might be because I have bought other CPS applications in the past...

MOL is notorious for having CPS/RSS available for download even if you have not purchased. You got lucky.

Null cable does not seem to work . . .

As advised . . . I purchased a DB9 male to female null cable, but after hooking it up between my computer and the Quantar.

It says misconfiguration or no COM port seen, so now I wonder what the correct cable is? The shop I bought the Quantar from thought it might be a straight through cable? I see a shop on EBay selling a Quantar cable just for this use, but they want $34.95, ouch!

Does anybody know exactly what this cable actually is? I'll buy whatever I need, just want to get it right, thanks

Nope, no reason to blow $34.95 on this - it's definitely a DIY item. Here's how it should pin out:

DB9F <-> DB9M
1 <-> Nothing
2 <-> 3
3 <-> 2
4 <-> Nothing
5 <-> 5
6 <-> Nothing
7 <-> 8
8 <-> 7

unless you bought a special built cable, male to female cables are almost always straight thru. you need a null, which is usually a female to female cable when buying stock cables. then use a gender bender to make one end male to plug to the SCC.
