The QR DMR system is a Tait Tier III trunking system. Tier III means it is pure trunking, unlike some other systems which are pseudo trunking. In other words, they look like trunking, behave like trunking but are not.
Unlike the early days of trunking when channels maps were used and programmed to determine frequency usage, Tier III has to be told the frequencies Logic Channel Number (LCN's) and because it is TDMA, Logic Slot Number (LSN's or which there is two) to assign to a transmission. What all that means is a physical channel is divided into to two virtual channels (time slots). Pseudo trunking systems like Cap+ and Con+ also used LCN's and LSN's.
Determining what the LCN's are is system based. It depends on how the system is structured. To start with enter all the frequencies for a site into the Uniden. Leave the LCN column as 0 (zero). Enter the applicable colour code (DCC) if known otherwise leave as Search. Once that is done, the Uniden's have a unique feature labelled LCN Finder (the user guide will give you the button pushing steps on how to enable it). Let this run for a day or two. It will locate the LCN's being used on the system. Large systems will provide a return quicker than smaller or less busy ones. Save the discovered LCN's to memory.
Don't be surprised if not all frequencies have an LCN, they maybe licenced to a site but not used. It is known as 'parking' a frequency mainly for future expansion.
Also Tier III systems have a 'heartbeat', that means they transmit data so that portables and mobiles 'know' which signal is best to lock onto. It is slightly more complicated than that, but you get the idea. You will see that activity on the scanner screen, it is not voice just beeps.
