Question about Air Evac!!

Hi, I am wondering if the air evac coverage is statewide in Kentucky?
I live in Bell County, Kentucky to be specific.. Very mountainous area.
Also, I am wondering if the Air Evac frequencies can be heard over long distances? Thanks in advance!!

Best as I can tell, there are at least two air evac services in Kentucky. One is Air Methods and the other is PHI. Wouldn't be surprised if someone in West Virginia may also operate in Kentucky.

I'll hear both Air Methods (mostly) and PHI (rarely) calling in to University of Louisville hospital.

I think they use different towers throughout the state on different frequencies.

I imagine the helicopter/base comms go a pretty good distance with the helos being in the air, but hearing them via scanner is iffy. Whenever I hear them call into U of L, they are about 10 minutes out and are staticy.

Also, when you say they have bases all over Kentucky, I am wondering if that means I should be able to hear them in Bell county?

You can hear aircraft in flight at long distances depending on their altitude.
Some Air Evac Lifeteam frequencies might not be in the database.
Sometimes they move or shut down operations and the dtatabase listings might not be used any longer.
Check the wiki article and see if it agrees with the database for the ones in your area.

I doubt they will ever go p25, however our radios in the aircraft can be programmed on p25 channels. They are currently trying to program all base radios in pager mode to allow us to start being dispatched 24/7 over the radio, that is why they put the double 2 tones for dispatching. They are wanting pager mode so that we can leave the radios on at night and not be disturbed by other aircraft on that tower. Currently flight request are dispatched by phone from 10pm to 8 am. Some bases have started doing the 24/7 radio dispatch so your area may already. Hope this helps

They seem to be using pager mode here (AirEvac 39, Brazil IN airport, 158.400 DCS 155). I hear the double 2-tone go off in the wee hours if I'm up. They use the Safe-T P25 TSYS for LZ ground contact when possible, but some Departments are still on VHF analog; they're usually very accommodating about tuning the frequency and mode required. I've always enjoyed working with them.
