Question about FM AND AM

When entering conventional frequencies in my Pro-96 I have the choice of AM or FM mode. How do I know which mode is appropriate for a given frequency? Don't laugh, I am a radio dummy. Thanks for your help.

Lets make this easy. Unless it is CB, Aircraft, or AM Broadcast radio, it will be FM.
