Kenwood makes excellent Amateur radios (Ham) but they are not FCC type accepted for use on MURS frequiencies, using them on these frequineces is illegal, and not recommended.
hey sandy. im fully aware of that. im actually going to use ham with the other patrol group captain. i think thats the best thing to do since we have 6 2 meter repeaters.

I'm not so sure thats really an appropriate use for amateur radio.

FRS is only a 1/2 watt, it would only work for a couple of blocks. Not much coverage. Plus its on the uhf band. I say go with murs atleast youll have more coverage and a pl/dpl activation for less interference. Unlike the bubble pack frs radio that give u ch 8-14 with an open squelch. I would say dont invest in that if are surronded by buildings, commercials, and cell towers it would be a waste of money since your farthest coverage may be only 2-4 blocks.

duchee, I would suggest you get a business band license on UHF and purchase a second hand repeater with a telephone interconnect. You will have much greater flexibility and most importantly dependable communications for your organizations needs.

If you need any help give me a ring.

If you can use 2 meter HTs to talk through a repeater why not experiment on simplex to get an idea of what MURS can do.
You should be able to get 2 to 3 miles between two HTs.

Simplex is NOT using a repeater and usually transmitting and receiving on the same frequency. I think the national simplex freq is 147.520.

An HT means Handi Talkie. The same as walkie talkie. I think Motorola coined the term Handi Talkie.

I assume HTs are what you wanna use? Anyway by talking simplex on 2 meters with 2 watts or so output you can get a fairly good idea of what MURS will do.

well that's like saying I can't program my vertex with gmrs frequencies becaues its not part 95 ceritfied. I think these rules are rarely enforced by the FCC.

on 2 meter ham, completely irrelevant to the topic of this thread.

Its not irrelevant.. I was suggesting that if he can talk to another ham all they need to do is use simplex with two HTs and walk around the area he wants to use MURS on and he can get a good idea of what MURS can do.

If it were up to me I would buy the most powerful HTs I could afford. Use one foot rubber duckies and I bet he gets the coverage he wants.
