Question about scanning and driving

I Purchased a uniden 346xt for scanning portable when driving. It works fine when stopped but when driving I get no range and broken transmissions. is there any way to improve range buy purchasing a bigger antenna.?

An external antenna would help. Also depending on what type of system you are scanning and how you have the scanner set, some look for the strongest signal and it is easier to find when moving.

By all means, You need an outside antenna.

Here is a listing of most of the popular scanner antennas. Prices vary, some high, some low. The model put out by Spectrum Force fills a niche in that is cheaper than most, has the coax and has the correct antenna coax fitting for access to the radio of choice. Its light weight, good magnet, and improves range..For traveling, rental cars, or for casual mobel operations, it works good.

That's called Picket-Fencing, and sometimes can't be avoided.

It's not so much about a 'bigger' antenna, but one designed for the band you are listening to the most. Whatever you have the hardest time listening to, then get an exterior antenna for that band. Other strong signals should still be OK usually. The so-called 'wide-band' antennas, will sometimes make things worse, not better... because they will pickup so many signals, you can have interference issues. But yes, the 'picket fence' thing can still happen sometimes, no matter what.
