Last night, I kept hearing Investigator 1 calling Engine 7 on the Roanoke PD channel 3. Did anyone else hear this? I know it's not just my scanner, because I tuned another scanner I had and heard the same thing on channel 3. Any thoughts? I did hear regular police traffic on ch. 3 also that night, but there was something going on downtown last night that I could not figure out what it was.

They were working an arson investigation with PD and had the FD TAC-4 channel patched to PD Chan 3 (they started on FD TAC-3 but moved it).

A patch can be initiated on any dispatch console. When patched, the traffic from one channel will be automatically transmitted on both allowing agencies that normally can't communicate together to talk to each other.

On a Motorola system, like Roanoke's, patched talkgroups include a special status bit. Depending on how you have your scanner set to interpret the STATUS BITS will determine whether this shows up with the normal talkgroup ID or as a different ID. On a Motorola radio it is tranparent.
