II would like to know if the Whisler WS 1040 will be able to scan and process EDACS ProVoice. I live in San Antonio, Texas and most of the frequencies here are EDACS ProVoice. I would like to purchase a scanner that will scan and process theese frequencies.

Unless Whistler somehow got access to the code/rights/permission, there is no commercially available scanner that can monitor ProVoice.

The WS-1040 will (reportedly) be a clone of the GRE PSR-500. Expect the features to match the GRE PSR-500 so if one has something, the other will and if it doesn't, the other won't.

Specifically on the ProVoice question, that's pretty simple to answer with a big NO. ProVoice is a proprietary way of doing things and one of the marketing points is that no scanner can receive it.

There is some hope, however. Start with the sticky in the Texas thread on the San Antonio EDACS ProVoice system (http://forums.radioreference.com/texas-radio-discussion-forum/2286-listening-san-antonio-faq.html) for info on that system. Next, move to the WIKI (also search the forums on the topic) to see what the software "DSD" (http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Digital_Speech_Decoder_(software_package)) and the newer "DSD +" (DSDPlus - The RadioReference Wiki) can do regarding ProVoice.

That's what builders depot has them at...doesn't mean everyone will have them at the same price. If they are, in fact, going to be that expensive across the board they're going to likely lose out to the new Uniden models with their ability to decode Phase 2 radio systems.

The pricing is still too high for a P25 Phase I capable scanner and the RRP looks ridiculous compared with Uniden's new x36HP line.

I can listen to ProVoice with Unitrunker and DSD. Why can this same code not be written for a scanner? If I'm not mistaken, a PSR-800 with firmware 1.06 would follow ProVoice talkgroups and play the digital noise through the speaker. Pipe that audio through DSD and you are in business. Half of the work has already been done. Now just integrate the DSD code into the scanner.
