• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have a KNG P800, now to get started i couldn't give a crap what they do since it was cheap. But i wanna travel to Up state New York and see Niagara Falls. Will TSA be up my ass about it and get mad and take it or are they cool with me taking it? Like i said i got it for really cheap and don't care i just wanna see what others have dealt with or if TSA is careless. Thanks

TSA won't blink twice if it's off and in your carry-on. I've carried a handful of radios through many US airports and never got a second glance. Don't be "that guy" that wears it on your belt to the security line or ask them for a frequency guide. You'll be fine.

I'll agree with the above.

I've never had an issue with TSA taking a radio through security, but I made sure it was in my carry on. Radio turned off. Not wearing it on in a pocket. If they ask about it, tell them the truth. If you are a ham/GMRS licensee, keep a copy of your license with you. TSA will have no idea what it is, but it might keep them satisfied.

When your bag goes through the security scanner they might ask you to open your bag so they can see what all the electronics and wires are for. Once they see it's a radio, you're good to go.

I have flown to incidents with my APX 8k in both carry on and in checked baggage with no issues since my assignment to the VI after Irma and Maria in 2017. I usually have to fly at least twice a year to assignments.

Been on many flights and crossed boarders with my radiosand never been asked a question. If driving just dont pull up to the customs gate with it blaring. When flying mine are in my back pack. Never been asked once about them.

Pre 9/11 I was asked to turn over some radios to the captain before boarding. I thought it pretty weird. I did not have them out or blaring. They were buried in a carry on.

As a retired TSA Supervisor, I never cared, no one did, they might swab it for explosives but that's it.
BUT like mentioned, check the local laws where you're going, yes even Canada.
